Girl Stories
Sarah Bennett, Gold Award recipient
I have benefited from the leadership opportunities in Girl Scouts. My Gold Award let me teach peo ple from 5 to 50 years old how to crochet in order to relieve stress and serve others. It was a wonderful experience in budgeting, organization, and engendering enthusiasm with my volunteers.
The most priceless and rewarding experience in Girl Scouts is being a Council Trainer (facilitating training for adults in the council) and the opportunity to experience the role reversals of teaching adults. Each fellow trainer and trainee responded differently to my being considered an equal. Some welcomed the idea while others had to warm up to it. I learned that mutual respect is the key to successful teaching. I enjoyed the wisdom and experience they brought to the training and learned what I had to offer. The confidence and humility I gained made me comfortable working with adults in authority positions or as equals. These lessons learned will benefit me as I enter that adult world.
Samantha Mooren, Gold Award recipient
Scouting has taken me many places such as Savannah, the birthplace of Juliette Gordon Low; Helen, Georgia; and this summer to Pax Lodge, the International Girl Scout House in London. I have had many adventures in Scouting throughout my thirteen years, such as white water rafting, sewing, climbing, and camping. It has taught me about team building and trust through the various activities because you must work as a unit to accomplish the task at hand. Scouting gave me the opportunity to meet and create many new friends that I could end up working with. The leadership which is gained through hands-on work such as the Silver and Gold Award has helped me gain the skills that I will need to work with other people on future projects.

Girl Scouting has been such a great experience for me. It has helped me to keep friends from kindergarten. It also is what enabled me to go away from home for long periods of time, starting with resident camps. Girl Scouts has opened so many doors and taught me so many things.
